GS:
Thank you very much. Hi and good morning everyone. And Welcome to the Nets practice facility on this very significant day for the nets franchise. Before we introduce our distinguished panel on the stage, I would, of course, like to thank the staff and press for coming out today, along with our invited season ticket holders and sponsors, the kids from the Flatbush Youth Association, and the New York Boys&Girls Club, and of course, all those watching on YES and NBA TV. We'll have a full program for you.
Our panel needs a little introduction. Nets president Rod Thorn, Nets principal owner Bruce Ratner, Nets head coach Lawrence Frank, and #15. We will have remarks from all of those on the stage. We'll then have a Q&A, followed by the contract signing of our free agent.
At this time, I'd like to introduce the principle owner of the New Jersey Nets, Bruce Ratner. Bruce. (Applause)

BR:
Thank you Gary. Thank you Vince. Thanks everybody for coming here today. This is really one of the most exciting moments in Nets franchise history. It really really is. Vince has been a very significant and important part of this franchise for the last three years, and we are thrilled to annouce that Vince will remain a cornerstone of our team for years to come. Thank you Vince. (VC: Thank you.) (Applause)
As I've said publicly during this year, it was very important for me and our team to keep Vince with the Nets. We all know he is one of the most talented individuals in the League: he's exciting; fans adore him; and he's given us wonderful and great moments these last three years to enjoy. Most importantly, he's an unselfish player, a team player, and very importantly, a terrific person. I admire everything he does for us, everything on the court and everything off the court, including his wonderful foundation, which I've had the pleasure to visit the gala. And it has just shown what a wonderful individual Vince is in terms of giving back to the community.
With Vince Carter, with Jason Kidd, with Richard Jefferson, with Nenad Kristic, with our new Sean Williams, addition to our team, with the great bench, I'm very excited that we'll have a terrific season and competitive season this year. And I want to thank the person who directs the activity on the floor, our great coach Lawrence Frank. Thank you Lawrence. (Applause) And I wanna thank a person who I'm very close to and has just done a terrific job in putting this, producing the entire event, the one and only Rod Thorn. Thank you Rod. (Applause) And Ed Stefanski, our GM. They really put a wonderful team together. I would also like to thank Kurt Schoeppler, the agent of Vince Carter, who's done a wonderful job. We've had nice conversations off the record, and some on the record.
There's a great buzz about our franchise and about the whole organization including the business side. And I'd like to thank wonderful and terrific Brett Yormark, CEO of Nets Sports Entertainments for putting everything together. He's just done a great job also. Our ticket sales are ahead of last season's. We continue a wonderful attendance record this past year. This year will even be better. Our organization is known for its wonderful entertainment when Vince and team are not on the floor. So we will continue that great great experience. And I'd like to thank everybody in this organization for what they do best, which is character, leadership, family and teamwork.
And as we've shown today, I'm committed to winning. And this franchise is committed to winning while at the same time upholding the great standards that I've had the pleasure to work with. Thank you all very much. Now I'd like to introduce Rod Thorn to take the way ... (Applause)
0441
RT:
Thank you very much Bruce. I would echo almost everything that Bruce said. I think this day is a very red-letter day for this franchise to resign Vince for not only the near future but the immediate future. I think it is very important for this franchise.
You know when you look at players, all of us, those of us in this business, tend to look at players on the production side. And when you look at what Vince has done, over the course of his two and a half years with us, he's been one the best players in the League. This past year, almost 25 points a game, almost 6 rebounds a game, almost 5 assists a game. How many people in the League are capable of doing that? You can count on them in one hand. And that's what Vince does for us. He's the player that takes the majority of the big shots down the stretch; he's the player that we lean on during times of stress, and much more often than not he's come through for us. And when you have that type of player, we certainly would have been remiss had we let Vince get away. Fortunately it didn't happen. You know this man has made the All Star team now eight times, he's been in All League first, second and third team player several times and is known around the League as one of the best players in the League. That he has chosen to remain with us, we feel very fortunate.
It was an interesting negotiation this time for me, in that normally negotiations are up, down and sideways -- you never know where they are from one second to the next, but because we wanted to sign with Vince and because Vince wanted to be with us, this one was just a matter of where the final monetary aspect was to come out. Mr. Schoeppler asked and I gave, and then we were able to make an equatable contract. I thank you Kurt for your efforts and particularly Vince. We are looking forward to many more years in the Nets uniform and we're looking forward to our team continuing to get better. And we feel very fortunate to have you on our team, Vince. Thank you very much. Now our coach Lawrence would like to say a few words, Lawrence. (Applause)
0754
LF:
Well I don't like to follow both the owner and the president, so there's not a whole lot left to be said. First I'd like to thank Vince for deciding to come back. I think when you're a free agent you obviously have a lot of options. Someone like Vince, a player of his caliber for the impact he can make on a team, it would be very easy for him to say he want to explore the field. And you see in all sports how guys decide to do that. But Vince made it clear that he wanted be a Net. He loves the organization. I'm sure he'll tell you how he feels about it. So I'd like to thank him for deciding to stay.
Then next I'd like to thank Bruce and the other owners who have made a tremendous financial investment in these days about luxury tax. I think it just shows you the commitment that Bruce has towards winning and building an organization and then, thanking Rod and Ed for executing the deal.
With Vince, I think we're very fortunate. As coaches, it's when your best players are your hardest workers and your most coachable guys, you're always gonna have a chance to win every single time you play. And Vince embodies that spirit. He's a guy that has missed very few games since putting on a New Jersey Net uniform. And yet he received probably the most contact of any of our players, 'cause he attacks the rims as anyone we have on our team. It says a lot about it. Virtually every night, he's never a hundred percent, yet he always gives a hundred percent.
So we look forward to great things. We're extremely excited. That has been said: this is a great day for the Nets. And yet it's just a start to a very encouraging season that's gonna start, well, not too far away. So thanks everyone for coming, without further ado I would like to throw it back to our MC, Mr. Gary Susman. And I look foraward to see all you guys in October. (Applause)
1000
GS:
Thank you very much, coach. Those at home can see but whenever anything is put on by Brett and Patria(?) it's more than just a press conference. This is also a Nets event. Nets Overtime, of course, sponsored by Wrigley's brand. Just want to make sure I got that in. Now Vince has set a number of records for the Nets since he's been in the Net uniform for the past two and a half years. So at this time, we'd like to take a brief snip of it. A little video highlight of what Vince has done over the past two and a half years. And this highlight was edited by our own RM(?).
In-your-face
I thought the laughing of Jim Spanarkel on the Alonzo Dunk may have been the be all and end all. As you saw on that highlight, one of the constant factor was JKidd almost ripping Vince's head off after a number of his spectacular plays. Now there's a lot of people who are able to be here today, but where Butch Cassidy goes, Sundance also has to go. So at this point let's here from #5.
1246
JK:
Thanks Sus(?). Congratulations Vince. You deserve every penny that you get. Now dinner's on you untill I retire. And hey, I've been looking for you. I'm in Tahoe. I'm in Spain. I just can't find you. Where are you? Return my phone calls. I know you got the big contract, but you can call me back.
1309
(Applause) GS:
There's not much to say after that. Ladies and gentlemen, Vince Carter. (Applause, Cheers)
1320
VC:
First of all, that's not true. I called Jason back all the time. (Laughter) We talk frequently. But first of all, I'd like to thank everybody for coming out to this special day, not only for me but for the organization. Thank Rod, Bruce, Ed Stefanski, coach you too. (Laughter) You're a big part of this also. That was pretty much.
Everybody says it's all about the money all the time; it's all about this. It's about being happy, and being at a place where it feels like home. And also, can you do with the coach 82 games. So I figure [for] a couple more years I can handle it. (Laughter) But like I said, this is monumental; this is a wonderful day.
I'm gonna keep it short and brief, but going through free agency was something new for me. The last time that I was in a contract situation, I extended it immediately. This time it was kind of up and down. I didn't know what to do. I had wonderful conversations with Rod numerous amounts of times throughout the year on how to handle it, and this is as well with Kurt and my family in general. I'm just trying to figure out how to go about this and doing it the right way.
My two and a half years here has been wonderful and very exciting. You see we have accomplished a lot of things. We still haven't reached where we wanna go yet. I felt like the job wasn't done, so I have to come back and finish my duty, my job here. Bruce and the organization have done a great job trying to get the right guys here. They have proven to me and they'll continue to do to bring top-notch guys here to make it work. You want to have a well-oiled machine from top to bottom. And by me staying here, it's just another way of saying "hey, let's get the job done". So thank you for your support and since everybody's watching, we're looking forward to more season-ticket holders to become Nets fan. (Laughter, Applause) And that would be for you Leo. Definitely thank you very much, I'm definitly thrilled and excited to be a part of the Nets organization for the years to come. Thank you. (Applause)
1525
GS:
Vince selling tickets as well, Bret. (Laughter) Can't ask for more than that. Unbelievable. Nets Overtime, brought to you by Wrigley's. (Laughter)
At this juncture we'll have a Q&A period. And I as always encourage questions from our audience, we have wireless mikes and please you must wait for the microphone. Vince's mom could not be here. She is watching though, on Yes. And she would like to hear the questions.
So first up. Of course, Dave D would like to have the first question. Dave.
1605
DD: Vince welcome back to Jersey. (VC: Thank you.)Is there ever a time, either last season or either in this summer when you thought this might not happen?
VC: I knew it could happen. It's just about patience and waiting for the right time, like all season. I'll tell you, I kinda put that on the shelf and wanted to consentrate on my season. And I probably played my best basketball this year because of that, instead of trying to juggle both of them, worrying about a contract and playing basketball. I think, like I said, if I do my job on the court, everything else would take care of itself.
1640
Al: Did you ever really consider yourself or envision yourself in another uniform during any of this process?
VC: It was hard to do so. You hear about all the other places I possibly can go. One being home, one in Charlotte. You hear about those things. You try to envision about this it's just, like, cloudy. If it's cloudy that just means it's not gonna work. In my mind, I kinda tried to approach it like college. Every night I go to sleep and say where can I envision myself, and they all seem cloudy. And once you put yourself in New Jersey, it just seemed clear and rife, and seemed the right thing to do.
GS:Rach(?)? Julie ... Ladies don't fight amongst yourselves. Thank you. (Laughter)
1727
Julie: Alright I'll take the lead here. Vince, for you, personally, to play and continue playing alongside Jason Kidd, what does that mean for you as well as the fact that the Nets front office has made the effort to really keep the core of nucleus of this team together, hopefully allowing you to further what you've done and maybe get to that championship game?
VC: That's definitely important to me that you keep your core group together. When you're trying to strive for a championship, you want to keep that group together cause you understand each other, you know your likes and dislikes. And first and foremost, we all get along. When you add myself, JKidd, RJ and Krstic and pretty much anybody else you want. I think that's the ingredient, having guys together that really know each other like the back of our hands. I felt that was very important.
1821
Julie: I saw her question but now I have a follower question for you then. Regards that having kept this core of nucleus together, is there any pieces yet that you think should be added or you would like to see be added in order to...? (VC Gesturing) Or you would rather me to ask that question to Rod Thorn?
VC: (Gesturing) You gotta ask that guy down there.
Julie: He's differing to you Rod. Is there anything else, say, you would like to see added to this team in order to help them get pass the second round of the playoffs, or is there anything that you might be working for that?
RT: Well I think that definitely we are a big player short. Right now we are in the process of trying to sign one. Hopefully we will in a timely fasion. I think we need a little more strength around the basket. It would be one thing. You can never have enough good shooters. And particuarly when you have Vince and Richard that are double-teamed a lot on the wing, you need good shooters on the weak side. Nachbar really came through forth last year, but if we can get another guy who can make open jump shots on the weak side, I think that would help us. You know you can never have enough good players. So hopefully we'll be able to have a couple pieces that will impell us to a higher station.

GS: Rach, after Julie dominated ...
Rach: Yes she went down my roll of questions, so now I'll have to scroll down. Vince as far as this team, with regards to Jason Kidd. Obviously, time is only so long especially with his knees and what not. Is there a sense of emergency at this point with you and with this team getting back to those NBA finals?
VC: I think a young JKidd and a young Vince at 25 or 26 still would say it's a sense of urgency. I think he's proven at his age that he can still get the job done. Of course you want to go out there and get the ring as soon as possible, and that's our goal. But I think we have put the time in the offseason to offset our age to really stay healthy and do the job. So definitely we hope we can get our job done now. That's our plan. You got guys like Nachbar who are working out right now, who's walking in the back. Gotta show you some love. (VO: #7 Boki Nachbar. By the way, Boki wanted to make sure that Vince actually was signed in the contract so that he would get those open threes.) I got you. (Laughter) No it's all about putting the time in, taking care of our bodies and preparing for the year. Because it's a so long and grueling year, and we understand if you're gonna win the championship, it's longer than 82 games. That's why it's important to bring the help in, and has some guys do the job for us as well. It's really cut some of our minutes back. And we can play a lot of minutes, in the end when it counts.
2121
Al: Vince, how much did Jason play into this, whether talking to him beforehand, during and after everything?
VC: We Talked briefly before, but Jason said I didn't answer his calls, but he didn't really answer my calls. We won't put that on record. (Laughter) We talked here. We didn't really talk much. I think he was just giving my space and just told me to make the decision that's best for me. That was it. We understood what could happen and what could be done. I definitely want to be back; was just waiting for the right time.
2202
VO: Vince normally in these situations the first thing players always talked about was the NBA title, but you mentioned happiness. Is happiness more important? Does that always supercede the title, or assumed you don't get a title will you regret?
VC: I think both. But you definitely you want to be happy. You wanna go to work happy each and every day, like we all do right? We all wanna go to work happy. When you're happy you can work towards that title. Everyday you come to work, excited about getting better, excited about make your teammates better, and that is what it's all about.
2236
GS: Any other questions? Well it's a good sec away into making people happy. Because right now we're gonna make the photographers and the control room and YES very happy, as we'll have the contract signing. Now if the photographers can stay right there, is that ok? You guys ok there? This way TV can get their shots ... The Contract signing.
RT: V-I-N-C-E. (Chuckles)
VC: Thanks Rod. And I did spell my name right. (Laughter)
GS: At this particular point we're going to break for photos and then our group interviews. So without further ado let me turn over to Ian Eagle, Ian. Thank you very much.

Bruce. (Applause)
0117

1944

Bruce. (Applause)
0117
(Applause)

1944

Bruce. (Applause)
0117
(Applause)

(Applause)

1944
