Huaquiao University of China downed fellow visiting squad Hanyang University of South Korea, 70-65, to clinch the first championship seat in the 6th Asian University Basketball Championships (AUBC) last Thursday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Chinese finished their elimination round campaign with four wins and one loss and will face the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lncers in the finals.
The Green Lancers secured the second finals berth after beating the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras yesterday, 89-69.
The Lancers also finished the elimination round with four wins and one defeat.
Zhang Jiabin sparked a crucial run in the third quarter, where, at one point, he scored 11 straight points spiked on three triples, pushing the Chinese to a 42-37 lead.
Zhang finished with a game-high 16 points, filling the slack vacated by main men Jiang Xinxin and Chee Li Wei, who just scored 10 each.
Huaquiao posted its biggest lead of nine points, 54-45, at the start of the fourth period but the gritty Koreans staged 9-2 run to rally within a point, 57-58. Huaquiao stretched its lead back to five, 62-57, and was never threatened until the final buzzer.
Kim Woo Kyum topped Hanyang with 15 points.
