Iverson ponders contract situation

Friday, May 30 at 6:50 PM

CHRIS TOMASSON ON THE NUGGETS

How low will Allen Iverson go?
Don't expect Iverson to be doing the limbo. But the more flexibility he is willing to show the Nuggets, the more his chances seem to be of signing a multi-year deal with them.
Iverson, who turns 33 on June 7, long has said he wants to finish his career in Denver. Now is his chance to enhance that chance.
Iverson's personal manager Gary Moore, told the Rocky Mountain News on Friday that, in recent discussions with Denver brass, the Nuggets "seem to be very willing'' to offer Iverson a multi-year contract if he were to opt out of his contract by the June 20 deadline.
Iverson is due $20.84 million next season. If he were to opt out, he would become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
But nobody expects Iverson to opt out unless the plan is to sign a new deal with the Nuggets. On the open market, Iverson wouldn't figure to get anything near $20 million for next season.
Let's say Iverson doesn't opt out of his contract and becomes a free agent July 1, 2009. As a 34-year-old guard, Iverson might not even be able to get half his 2008-09 salary in 2009-10.
With that in mind, Iverson could agree to take a pay cut next season in order to get more years on his contract. But how much would Iverson have to give up in order to get additional years out of the Nuggets?
Due to being deep into the luxury tax, there is an extra advantage to the Nuggets if Iverson would agree to take less money next season. Let's say Iverson is willing to take a $5 million pay cut. The Nuggets would save $10 million next season when one considers the dollar-for-dollar luxury tax.
But the Nuggets obviously would have to make up for Iverson taking a cut by giving him extra years. Would they be willing to sign him for $15 million in 2009-10?
And what about 2010-11, when Iverson is 35? It's hard to project how much he will have slowed down by then. Maybe the Nuggets could offer a contract for that season that is not fully guaranteed.
There is recent precedent for a star player opting out of his contract, and taking an immediate pay cut in order to get more security for the long haul. New Jersey forward Vince Carter agreed last summer to take less money for 2007-08 in exchange for additional contract years.
Carter was due $16.4 million, but opted out of the final year of his deal and signed a five-year contract starting at $13 million. The last year of the contract is a team option nobody expects the Nets will end up invoking.
But the big difference is Carter signed his new deal at 30 ½. That's 2 ½ years younger than when Iverson is potentially eyeing a similar move.
The most years Iverson could command on a new deal is three. That's because a four-year deal would carry into when Iverson is 36. Salary-cap rules change if a player signs a deal beyond a 36th birthday, meaning Denver would take a huge financial hit if they signed Iverson to any deal beyond three years. There's no way the Nuggets would offer any such contract.
Nevertheless, some observers don't believe it makes sense for the Nuggets to sign Iverson to any sort of multi-year deal. After all, if Iverson sticks with his original contract, the Nuggets potentially could clear more than $20 million off their bloated payroll at the end of next season.
And Iverson, if he stuck with his original deal, could be quite a trade piece in the months leading up to next February's trade deadline. Teams likely would be lining up, offering draft choices and prospects, for a chance to clear $20 million off the cap thanks to an expiring contract.
But let's see what happens as Iverson ponders what to do by June 20. How low might Iverson be willing to go with next season's contract number?

READER COMMENTS

Carter has a $5 million buyout in his final year. His contract is $80 million over five, with $66 million guaranteed.

'Answer' won't be question for long

Nuggets to address Iverson's future soon

Nuggets guard Allen Iverson might opt out of a $20.84 million deal to sign a multiyear contract.

Joe Mahoney / The Rocky

Nuggets guard Allen Iverson might opt out of a $20.84 million deal to sign a multiyear contract.

How long might "The Answer" stick around Denver?

The answer could be coming soon.

Gary Moore, personal manager for guard Allen Iverson, said Friday the Nuggets "seem to be very willing" to offer Iverson a multiyear contract if he were to opt out of the final year of his current deal by the June 20 deadline.

But Moore, who said he recently began talks with Denver brass about Iverson's future, declined to discuss how many years the Nuggets might be willing to give Iverson or offer monetary figures.

Iverson can opt out of a deal paying him $20.84 million next season and become an unrestricted free agent July 1. Most observers don't believe Iverson would opt out unless it was to sign a new contract with the Nuggets.

It also is not believed the Nuggets would sign Iverson to a multiyear deal unless he agreed to take less money next season.

Shortly after Denver's season ended April 28, Moore said he would have discussions with the Nuggets about Iverson, who turns 33 on June 7, possibly opting out and signing a three-year deal. But a source at the time described the Nuggets, deep into the luxury tax, as wary of committing extra dollars to Iverson.

Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien confirmed having discussions with Iverson's camp but declined further comment.

"We want to finish our career in Denver, but we have no decision on (whether Iverson will opt out)," said Moore, who added that a decision by Iverson won't be made until close to the June 20 deadline in his contract for opting out.

Moore said discussions with Nuggets officials about Iverson's future are in their early stages.

"They have gone quite well," said Moore, declining to offer specifics, other than saying the Nuggets are open to getting Iverson under contract beyond next season.

Obviously, a key factor would be what the contract numbers might be. If Iverson, in exchange for additional contract years, were to sign a new deal that paid him $5 million less next season, the Nuggets would save $10 million due to the dollar-for-dollar luxury tax.

New Jersey Nets forward Vince Carter agreed last summer to take less money for 2007-08 in exchange for additional contract years. Carter was due $16.4 million but opted out of the final year of his deal and signed a five-year contract starting at $13 million.

While Moore hasn't said Iverson would take less money next season, he has cited what Carter did as something the Iverson camp has evaluated.

ETC.: Unless Nuggets forward Bobby Jones is waived by Aug. 15, his $797,581 contract for next season becomes guaranteed. Jones could be traded by then to a team seeking to reduce its payroll. In the same position is Nuggets guard Taurean Green, whose $711,517 deal becomes guaranteed if he isn't waived by Aug. 1. Jones and Green are expected to play for the Nuggets in the Vegas Summer League, which runs from July 11-20.

Marcus Camby...

Andrew Feinstein

Marcus Camby.

Camby.

The Nuggets Offseason: Allen Iverson...

With all of the attention paid to the New York media-concocted Carmelo Anthony-to-the-Nets-trade and the zillion nostalgia pieces being written about the upcoming Lakers/Celtics NBA Finals matchup, the fate of Nuggets' superstar Allen Iverson has gotten very little attention (except for the Rocky Mountain News' Chris Tomasson's detailed account of Iverson's contract situation on Friday).

The Situation: Iverson has one year remaining on his contract that will pay him almost $22 million in 2008-09, but he has the right to opt-out of the deal before June 20th and become an unrestricted free agent. According to Tomasson, the Nuggets' brass has already been discussing a contract renewal with Iverson's representatives for a three-year deal. To pull this off, Iverson would have to formally opt-out of his current contract, and then re-sign with the Nuggets for three years at a lower annual rate. But at 33 years old (five days from now), how much will Iverson be able to command from Denver, a team already well over the NBA's luxury tax limit?

The Good: As everyone reading this blog knows, Iverson is an absolute warrior on the court. At 32 years old in 2007-08, he played in all 82 games and led the NBA in minutes per game while regularly taking a pounding on the court. Overcoming his advanced age for a grossly undersized shooting guard and a broken bone in his non-shooting hand, Iverson finished third in scoring, ninth in assists (ahead of Andre Miller) and fourth in steals. In addition, Iverson had his second best career performances in turnovers-per-game and field goal percentage, meaning he's reigned in his game quite a bit for the Nuggets and is playing smarter and more under control.
Furthermore, known for having problems with coaches and the law during his tenure in Philadelphia, Iverson has been a model citizen in Denver and by all accounts is liked by teammates and wants to retire as a Nugget. If ever one needed proof of "the new Iverson," just look at the way he handled coach George Karl's (inexcusable) benching of him in Game 3 of the playoffs against the Lakers. Even though he admitted being frustrated by the decision, Iverson refused to throw his coach under the bus and even went as far as to say he'll do whatever the coach asks of him.
The Bad: At 5'11" (tops) and a scoring machine (Iverson is third all time in scoring average), Iverson is a tough player to build around. His most successful Philadelphia team - the 2000-01 squad that he carried to the NBA Finals - featured decent sized guards who primarily played defense (Aaron McKie and Eric Snow) to go along with a consortium of defense-first role players (Dikembe Mutombo, Tyrone Hill and George Lynch). In other words, the complete opposite of the Nuggets.
One problem I've noticed with Iverson - and this is just my view from the cheap seats - is that he's not a transformative, vocal leader a la Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Chris Paul or Baron Davis. I don't know if he's trying to defer to Carmelo Anthony, or just fit in since he's new to Denver, or if it's just not in his nature anymore, but he doesn't seem to impose his will on his teammates (and frankly, opponents) like he did in Philadelphia. As a 76er, Iverson would just take over games and carry his team if need be. In Denver, he seems to go about his job with tremendous effort and yet do so quietly at the same time, allowing his teammates to be self-accountable. This was especially apparent during the playoff sweep against the Lakers in which Iverson appeared to just go through the motions while his Nuggets teammates, especially Anthony, imploded around him.
And, of course, there's the elephant in the room: the Anthony/Iverson situation. I think they genuinely like each other, but it's inarguable that Iverson's arrival (precipitated by Anthony foolishly punching Mardy Collins during the Madison Square Garden Melee in 2006) has stunted Anthony's growth. Anthony has taken a lot of heat - justifiably - on this blog and elsewhere in Nuggets Nation - but we quickly forget how good he was (and how in-shape he was) before the brawl and how well he plays within a system that suits him (a la Team USA). And regardless of what many of this blog's readers have said, Anthony will remain just as trade-able at 25 as he is now at 24 should he disappoint us further in the 2008-09 postseason (assuming the Nuggets get there).
Unfortunately for Iverson and us Nuggets' fans, this current crop of Nuggets players is desperate for veteran leadership and creative coaching to make the Anthony/Iverson duo as lethal as possible...and they aren't getting much of either right now.
The Verdict: Traded to Denver for Andre Miller essentially, the Nuggets have gone from an under performing yet talented team with an over-dribbling point guard to an under performing yet talented team with an over-dribbling shooting guard who might just be the third best shooting guard of all time (behind only Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Jerry West perhaps).
The Nuggets are in a bit of a tricky spot with Iverson. As the News' Tomasson points out in his summary of the contract situation, even if Iverson takes a pay cut - say, by $7 million or so - and asks for $15 million per season for the next three seasons, that still puts the Nuggets well over the luxury tax threshold limiting their future flexibility. By not re-upping Iverson now, the Nuggets could see how the season plays out and use the superstar guard as trade bait since he puts asses in the seats to go along with what would be a $22 million expiring contract. The problem with the latter route is that the Nuggets would risk insulting Iverson (not that paying someone $22 million to play basketball should be an insult, but this is the NBA) and, unlike Davis and others in the league, Iverson doesn't need to be in a contract year as incentive to appear in every single game...and play hard while doing so.
The bottom line for me is this: I don't want the Nuggets to lose Iverson but I don't want them to waste his last two good years either by overpaying him (meaning the team couldn't surround him with quality role players like he had in Philadelphia). By bringing head coach George Karl back, the Nuggets are already wasting one more season of Iverson's services. But if the Nuggets can get Iverson to sign for something in the $14 million per season range, I say do it.
However, if Iverson and his reps decide to hardball the Nuggets and demand something like $18 million per season, I say let him enter the 2008-09 season as an unrestricted-free-agent-to-be and see what happens. If the season turns out to be a disappointment, the Nuggets could trade Iverson by the All-Star break for a few role players, fire Karl at season's end, and build the team around the younger players like Anthony (24), J.R. Smith (23) and Nene (25). It's too bad Iverson is almost 33 years old, because I'd take a younger Iverson over any of those aforementioned guys any day of the week.

The Nuggets Offseason: Kenyon Martin (and the All-NBA Most Untradeable Team)...

So far, DenverStiffs.com has chronicled the offseason situations of J.R. Smith, Eduardo Najera, Carmelo Anthony, Marcus Camby and Allen Iverson. Next up is Kenyon Martin, but frankly, there's not much to discuss or debate in regards to Martin ... because he's completely untradeable. In fact, Martin is the most untradeable player in the NBA. Therefore, I'll quickly recap Martin's case and get right to his teammates on the All-NBA Most Untradeable Team.

The Situation: Thanks to former Nuggets' GM Kiki Vandeweghe (with pressure from owner Stanley Kroenke to make a free agent splash in the summer of 2004), the Nuggets are on the hook to pay Martin $14 million next season, $15.4 million in 2009-10 and $16.5 million in 2010-11. The final season is technically a player's option, but I have a sneaky suspicion that Martin will re-up.

The Good: When healthy (which is rare) and motivated (perhaps even more rare), K-Mart brings a level of toughness and energy sorely lacking on the Nuggets. He still dunks with ferocity and can put the clamps down on an opposing player who is his height or shorter.

The Bad: What made the K-Mart trade and signing so ridiculously stupid was that Martin was never that good to begin with. In his BEST NBA season (while with the Nets), he averaged 16.7 ppg, 9.5 rpg, shot .488 from the field and missed 17 games. Nevermind that he was completely exposed in the 2003 NBA Finals when forced to go up against a non-Eastern Conference power forward. In six games against the Spurs, Martin never once shot over 45%, and in the crucial fifth and sixth games, he made five shots against 31 attempts (including his epic 3-23 performance in Game 6 which amazingly never gets talked about alongside John Starks' 2-18 performance in Game 7 of the 1994 Finals).

And to top it all off, Martin was known as being a locker room cancer in New Jersey, which re-surfaced as a Nugget during his now infamous tirade against head coach George Karl and teammates during the team's embarrassing 2006 playoff loss to the LA Clippers.

The Verdict: Throw in multiple knee surgeries since joining the Nuggets and K-Mart's refusal to develop a mid-range jumper (even though every decent power forward in history including Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley, Kevin McHale and even Horace Grant had one), and you have the most overpaid / untradeable player in the NBA. And with Isiah Thomas no longer running an NBA franchise, K-Mart is going nowhere. There were moments during 2007-08 when it appeared as though Martin had had his humble pie and was just appreciative to be back on the court. But after eight seasons in the NBA, you are what you are. And in K-Mart's case, you're a 14.5 ppg, 7.2 rpg, undersized, injury-prone power forward with no offensive game to speak of other than an occasional thunderous dunk.

So rather than waste our time fantasizing about where Martin could end up, I thought I'd present the 2008 All-NBA Most Untradeable Team. To qualify for the team, a player has to have three seasons left on his contract, excluding team options (therefore, classic bad contracts like Stephon Marbury's or Bobby Simmons' are ineligible as an expiring contract, or soon-to-be-expiring contract, can be used as trade bait).

-Kenyon Martin, Denver. For all the reasons noted above.

-Troy Murphy, Indiana. A career 11.4 ppg, 7.9 rpg and .438 shooter, Murphy is due to make $10, $11 and $12 million over the next three seasons. Oh, and he's never played in a single postseason game.

-Eddy Curry, New York. For a guy due to make $9, $10.5 and $11.3 million over the next three seasons, Curry's stats aren't the problem. But he's perenially overweight, inarguably the worst non-European center on the defensive end and with the exception of one season in Chicago, every team he's been on has won 33 games or less.

-Erick Dampier, Dallas. Damp parlayed a double-figure rebounding performance in each of his last six games as a Warrior in 2004 into a contract that will pay him $9.5, $10 and (yikes) $13 million over the next three seasons in Dallas. In case you're curious, he's only gone six straight games with double-figure rebounds once since then, and that was during his first season as a Maverick. As a Maverick, he's never averaged more than 9.2 ppg and 8.5 rpg.

-Marco Jaric, Minnesota. Every dumb signing begins with a dumb GM, and there are few GMs dumber than Minnesota's Kevin McHale. After trading All-Star point guard Sam Cassell for Jaric in 2005, McHale signed Jaric to a contract that will pay him $6.5, $7 and $7.6 million over the next three years. Not only has Jaric never played in a postseason game, but he's a career 7.8 ppg, 3.9 apg and .408 shooter.

-Honorable Mention: Milwaukee's Dan Gadzuric ($20 million over the next three seasons, career 5.2 ppg and 4.8 rpg), and three more Knicks - Zach Randolph (great stats but a loser on every level who's owed $48 million over the next three years), Jamal Crawford ($28 million for three more years, 40% shooter) and Jared Jeffries ($19 million for three more years, career 5.3 ppg and 4.5 rpg).

Karl: Team will seek all means to get better

With eyes on the rapidly improving competition in the Western Conference, Nuggets coach George Karl said his organization should leave no stone unturned in trying to get better.

"You get better by free agency, you get better by making trades, and you get better by making your players better," Karl said Saturday. "I think we've got to observe all avenues. I don't think there's anything or any possibility that we should say 'No' to. I think our window should be open for business from agents to other teams to evaluating how we get our guys better as a coaching staff in the summertime."

The Nuggets were linked to now-defunct trade rumors involving Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey. Karl chuckled at the notion of that deal, saying "this is the time that the Internet and gossip circles have a lot of information."

He did not, however, rule out trading any player if the deal was right. "But it doesn't mean we're going to do anything," Karl added.

Though the Nuggets won 50 games, Karl admitted there was a sour feeling in how it turned out.

"It's a season that in a lot of ways, we had a better won-loss record, but we're kind of frustrated with we may have stepped back," he said. "We improved our record, but we actually had a couple teams probably go ahead of us that we got to be aware of. The Western Conference isn't going to get any easier next year. I think we all feel we want to make some decisions on how to get better."

One of those decisions is what to do in the June 26 NBA draft. The Nuggets have the 20th pick.

"I think anytime you pick low in the draft, you're trying to find the best player," Karl said.

Moe update.

Karl said Nuggets assistant — and former head coach — Doug Moe has yet to decide whether he will return for another season on the bench.

"I think Doug is in a stage of evaluating if he wants to do it again," Karl said. "Doug and I have had some really good talks. I would say there's a higher possibility of him not doing it than doing it."

And on Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown's recent overtures that Moe may join his staff?

"I think Larry Brown is playing musical chairs down there," Karl said. "If Doug does anything, he'll retire."

Footnotes.

Karl walks with a cane these days, nearly three weeks removed from hip replacement surgery. He says he's doing just fine. "I think I'm doing pretty good, 17 days out," Karl said. . . . Kansas forward Darrell Arthur was a late scratch from Saturday's workout. Maryland forward James Gist was injured during the workout.

Heels' Lawson skips shot to impress Nuggets

Denver planned to work out two high-profile guards while preparing for the draft, but only KU's Chalmers shows.

Ty Lawson has two seasons of eligibility remaining at North Carolina

Mario Chalmers helped Kansas win the NCAA championship.

The big prize was to be the presence of North Carolina's Ty Lawson, whose draft stock has risen among NBA teams that need help at point guard.

But Lawson was a no-show at the Nuggets' college player workouts Sunday, two days after he was arrested in Chapel Hill, N.C., and charged with driving after consuming alcohol. According to Nuggets coach George Karl, Lawson, 20, also had been dealing with nagging injuries. But Karl still was surprised not to see him.

"When I was coming this morning, I thought he was going to be here," the coach said.

Lawson and the point guard-starved Nuggets have been linked in recent days. A report from DraftExpress.com went so far as to say the Nuggets had promised to select the guard at No. 20 overall. Lawson has not hired an agent and still could return for his junior season with the Tar Heels.

"I definitely think he's going to be an NBA player," Karl said. "I'm sure he's going to make an NBA team someday. His decision is, will he do it this year or next year?"

Lawson's small stature — he is only 5-feet-11 — probably works against him coming to the Nuggets, who need a bigger guard. But his ability to push the ball is enticing.

"I like a guy that has been tutored in how to run," Karl said. "And (North Carolina coach) Roy (Williams) probably plays as fast as any coach in college basketball. Lawson throws the ball ahead. He throws the ball to scorers, which I think is something missing not only with the Nuggets but in the NBA. (Considering) his speed on the court, with our rules changes, (he) will be one of those players that can go anywhere he wants to go."

While Lawson canceled, Kansas guard Mario Chalmers didn't — and he has a defensive philosophy that should make the Nuggets take notice.

"I take great pride in defense," Chalmers said. "I just try to work on my defense, try to get better and try to always guard the best player on the other team."

As a perimeter defender, another high-level need for the Nuggets, Chalmers is one of the best options in the June 26 draft. He was routinely entrusted to guard the best opposing perimeter scorer while helping Kansas win the national championship. His size (6-1, 190 pounds) and length make him an intriguing prospect.

"Definitely a defender that can play NBA defense," Karl said. "Athletic ability and strength and courage is prime time. The thing I can't find in one practice, or two hours of work, is his decision-making and his ability to function. I thought at Kansas he played as much off-guard as he did point guard when I saw Kansas play."

Chalmers also comes with a deft 3-point touch, hitting 41.9 percent in his career at Kansas. He made 46.8 percent behind the arc last season, the biggest a game-tying 3-pointer late in regulation in the NCAA title game, which KU won over Memphis in overtime.

Ever since, Chalmers admits to being something of a celebrity.

"I can't go nowhere without being noticed nowadays," said Chalmers, who hasn't hired an agent but intends to stay in the draft. "But I like it."

Jettison Carmelo, bring back hometown hero

Go, Carmelo.

And take others with you.

Come home, Chauncey.

And bring others with you.

The Nuggets were eradicated in the first round of the playoffs by the Lakers. The Pistons were eliminated in the Eastern Conference finals by the Celtics.

Denver and Detroit, puck antagonists, should become basketball bedfellows.

After the Nuggets got squadoosh (nothing) in the series with L.A., there were whispered hints from within and loud demands from without that the team be changed.

In this space, several proposals, including a couple involving a trade of Carmelo Anthony to Dallas or New Jersey, were advanced. Results in The Denver Post's poll showed that for the first time since Anthony was drafted by the Nuggets, sentiment to deal him has increased significantly. That discussion was followed by a preposterous report out of New Jersey that the Nets would send all their trash to Denver for Anthony. His agent claimed the Nuggets weren't actively shopping Anthony. "Actively" is the key word because Anthony can't be traded until after June 30.

Over the weekend, Post columnist Mark Kiszla wrote, credibly, from the NBA Finals that a league source said the Pistons might be interested in the Nuggets forward.

When the Pistons were finished for the season, general manager Joe Dumars fired coach Flip Saunders and said: "Everybody is in play. There are no sacred cows here."

So, a swap meet is in order.

Truth is, the Pistons would be willing to trade "Mr. Big Shot," Chauncey Billups, and others, and the Nuggets are agreeable to listen to offers for "Mr. We Quit" and others.

The Pistons have point guard-in-waiting Rodney Stuckey, who took over when Billups strained his hamstring in the playoffs.

We know Billups. He is a hometown legend. Like Anthony, he was drafted No. 3 overall (1997, by the Celtics) and found his way back to Denver with the Nuggets in 1998-99. But he didn't break out as a pro until joining Detroit in 2002 and leading the Pistons to the 2004 championship, earning Finals MVP honors.

Billups is a point guard-in- command. He lives in Denver during the offseason. He should live here year-round.

The Nuggets need a great point guard, and Allen Iverson, who is not going away and can't be dealt away, needs a great backcourt mate. Anthony needs to go elsewhere to polish his career and reputation, and the Pistons need him to rejuvenate their fortunes.

Because of hockey, Denver and Detroit sports fans will never exchange Christmas cards, but they joyfully would exchange basketball players.

An exchange of Anthony, Marcus Camby, Kenyon Martin and Chucky Atkins for Billups, Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace and Detroit's first-round pick (29th) makes the most sense (and dollars under the cap for the Nuggets) and is scary-good for both teams. (Some might think just scary, but it definitely would be good.)

Rasheed Wallace? I know. But Wallace and George Karl have that North Carolina Connection, and Wallace played his strongest (controlled) basketball under Larry Brown, who also has tar on his Gucci loafers.

Tayshaun Prince, who would replace Anthony at small forward, is, at 28, only 4 years older than the Nuggets' small forward. He averages about 13 points a game, but is an outstanding shooter out to and beyond the 3-point arc. His numbers would shoot up with the Nuggets.

The combined approximate salaries for Billups ($11 million), Wallace ($16 mil) and Prince ($9.5 mil) would be about $36.5 million, while the Nuggets' reported total for Anthony ($14.4 mil), Martin ($14.2 million), Camby ($8 mil plus a possible $3 million in bonuses) and Atkins ($3.4 mil) probably would top $42 million. The Nuggets drop about $11 million in the dollar-for-dollar luxury tax, and Wallace's contract will expire after next season, allowing them more room then to maneuver.

The Nuggets have to tighten up defensively, and Billups and Prince are all-defensive team players, and Wallace does play defense, and does average 15 points, and does shoot 3-pointers with accuracy.

The Pistons get an all-star forward, an ex-defensive player of the year, a tough power forward and a backup point guard. The Nuggets get an all-time guard still in his prime, a special small forward with postseason experience and success, an unpredictable power forward who will play when he's not getting technicals, and a prospect. The offense will be a wash with Iverson, Billups, Prince and J.R. Smith scoring more, and the defense protecting Iverson and Smith and calming Western opponents.

Billups and Iverson in the backcourt, Prince and Wallace at forwards and Nene at center, with Smith, Anthony Carter and rookie Ty Lawson (the Nuggets' pick at 20) off the bench at guard and Linas Kleiza, the other rookie (Robin Lopez or Roy Hibbert), Steven Hunter and a midlevel salary exception free agent up front.

The Nuggets' and Pistons' plans for this season didn't work out. The Nuggets can't get out of the first round in the West. The Pistons didn't get back to the Finals in the East. If they do this deal, there will be new, improved plans in Denver and Detroit. And I just love it when a plan comes together.

By Woody Paige
The Denver Post

Carmelo.

Chauncey.

Haywood says Melo must do dirty work

Spencer Haywood believes the Nuggets need to develop a tougher attitude and also should look into the possibility of trading power forward Kenyon Martin. (Tom Donoghue, Getty Iamges )

Forty summers ago, basketball star Spencer Haywood won gold for the United States at the politically charged 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. In 1969-1970, he played his first professional season in the ABA for the Denver Rockets. He retired from the NBA in 1983.

Haywood, 59, is an outspoken basketball mind, blogging often about his own life in the game, as well as the current state of the NBA.

Q: As a rookie for the Rockets, you led the league in scoring (30 points per game) and rebounding (19.5). What are your thoughts on current Denver scoring star, Carmelo Anthony?

A: I think Carmelo Anthony has to decide who he wants to be. He came into the league with a lot of fanfare, has the skills to do things, but isn't following through on the other aspects of his game. You look at the guys he came in with. Dwyane Wade has become a strong defensive player, serious team player. And the "King" is the king. LeBron James is about winning, defense, whatever it takes. I don't see that with Melo. He seems to want to get his 30 points but not do the dirty work that's necessary. Now, I like his outside shot, but he needs to get his body in there and do the dirty work inside.

And — get the braids out. The style is dead.

Q: What are your thoughts on the current Nuggets?

A: It would be exciting to see some of those Denver players with that type of urgency and attitude (as the NBA Finals teams). As always, maybe next year.

I would have to let Kenyon Martin go. I don't know if Nene is healthy or what, but those guys would be on my trading block. I'd try to find someone who can really fulfill that power forward spot.

Q: You have a very interesting blog at legendsofbasketball.com. Why did you decide to get involved with this?

A: I thought it would be a way for us to amplify our voice as a retired players association, a thousandfold. And everybody's always talking about my sense of humor, always laughing and enjoying life. I started doing it as if my life depends upon it. It's an opportunity for me to let it all out — and share a part of me.

And, when I picked the Giants to win the Super Bowl, people said, 'Is he nuts?'

Q: You were at Colorado's Trinidad State Junior College when you joined the Olympic team in 1968. What were some of your memories of those Games?

A: We all lived in the same living quarters. (Boxer) George Foreman, (sprinters) John Carlos and Tommie Smith (who wore the black gloves during the national anthem), we all hung out. We had (legendary sprinter) Jessie Owens come in to talk to us. I remember him talking and guys were whispering, "This Uncle Tom!" and he got a little heated up and said, "How would you S.O.B.'s have felt running before Hitler? Huh? Huh? Huh?" That was the defining moment — like "Whoa."

We were going against our own people's wishes, is what we thought (by not boycotting the Olympics). But it wasn't black people's wishes that we were boycotting. Because when we returned, we were treated like we were American heroes.

They gave me a five-minute standing ovation at that Mexican Olympics. And I cried like I was a 2-year-old baby. I remember (African-American activist and professor) Harry Edwards saying, "What are you going to do to make a (political) statement?" But look at my situation. Three years before the Olympics, do you know what I was doing? I was picking cotton in the Delta of Mississippi, making $2 a day. All of a sudden I have a passport, eating, living the American dream. How do you make that jump? Only in America.

Fashion statement

Five reasons Spencer Haywood's era, the 1970s, were the most distinctive fashion era, according to the man himself:

1 Because of the music and the freedom of coming out of the '60s, we had diverse styles. Some people were into the hippie thing, some were crawling into the disco era. It was the most creative period.

2 My pinstripe suits.

3 The hair — the Afros, the long hair — everything was an experiment (in) individuality.

4 Platform shoes — though for a guy that's 6-foot-8, that's not really a cool thing.

5 Bell-bottoms. But the one problem with the bell-bottoms was, once, I was running to catch a bus (and) the bell-bottoms got caught under my platforms and I fell and hurt my wrist. I missed the next game. Only in the '70s could that happen.
